That's right. There seems to be two kinds of people who read Tavarish's articles. The first is the "I would TOTALLY do that if I had the money / my wife would let me / my husband would let me / I didn't already own 11 Citroens" crowd. The other is the "You'll spend that much keeping it running / I don't have time to wrench / I like my Camry's warranty / I live in an apartment and only have room for one car because for some reason all of the other 11 spots are taken up by old Citroens" crowd.
But it turns out there's a select few who note that they have some extra money saved up, have no less than five backup vehicles, a full complement of tools, access to a lift, a lot of mechanical know-how, and a desire to go 180mph while their back is massaged and heated.
The result? 2004 Mercedes S55 AMG. 100k miles, dealer-serviced since new, and in immaculate cosmetic and mechanical condition. If you've ever wondered what would happen if someone actually took Tavarish's advice, then you're about to find out.

What could possibly go wrong? Don't answer that. You might not be able to keep up with the things going wrong.

Keep us posted, I'm curious to see if it's as easy to keep running as Tavarish makes it sound.

How hard can it be? And besides, walking counts as backup transportation right? :)
Once I pull a Tavarish next year, I plan to get oppo authorship just to document my efforts

We actually did seriously consider that question before he bought it. The S55 engines are blueprinted and handbuilt, so the drivetrains themselves rarely go bad and are extremely durable. The V8 is also not plagued with $1,500-per-bank coil packs.
The suspension system (ABC) is where things can get pricey, but we've found kits and instructions to rebuilt all of the components if need be, and have been very diligent about flushing ALL of the fluids in the car and using OEM replacements.

He uses the law of averages to make sure he always has something he can take. His fleet consists of:
1963 Ford Falcon Convertible (inherited)
1972 Mercedes 350SL ($900)
1972 Mercedes 220D ($800)
1972 Mercedes 280SE ($1,100)
1986 Mercedes 190D ($600)
They've all been strangely reliable, and he's never been without at least two that he can drive. Let's hope the S55 continues the good luck streak!

That's quite a fleet! Best of luck to your friend.

Cool. You forgot about the third category of people who read Tavarish's posts - The people who don't know what they're doing and actually think that they're good ideas.

Do keep us updated on the most recent addition. So the question that needs to be asked, in light of the sweet price points of the fleet: How much did he pay?

There is an S65 AMG for sale in my area that is quite tempting. My wife didn't even scoff at the thought (I'm quite lucky that way). The resale value plummet on those cars is incredible.
While a twin turbo V12 may be a little over the top, I can certainly see buying a used S class at the buy-in point I'm seeing out there.

Someone please buy it so I don't.

$10,000 even, which struck us as a pretty good albeit not epic deal. The car is immaculate.

I bought a 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo, largely on the combined advice of Tavarish and DeMuro. Not regretting it. Even though it cost a lot more than $10,000.

very excited to read this to see if anything major happens. Does it have air suspension or normal coils and shocks?

Is it too late to write a disclaimer? Also, great job with the S55, looks like it has distronic and parktronic.
The only thing I'd worry about with that car is the supercharger bearing, as they tend to get worn out over time, and the ABC system, but it looks like you have your bases covered. Just make sure to keep debris out of the front cowl/vent area and you should have many worry free years of mind boggling acceleration.
Keep us updated!

Yep. I think the only option missing is the keyless ignition. It has the heated/cooled rear seats as well. One of the first things we did was the cowl inspection / fix so he's good there as well.
As for the acceleration, when we first picked up the S55 it was pretty late at night. We were cruising back on the freeway when my friend asked why everyone else was driving so slowly despite the empty roads. I took a glance at the speedometer and almost jumped out of my skin. They weren't going slow; we were going 120mph and had no idea.
